Helen Margaret Baumler, the third of seven children of Edwin and Glenn (Scott) Wagner, was born April 28, 1918, in Dover Twp., Fayette County, IA. She attended and graduated from West Union High School. Helen grew up on the family farm.
During World War II Helen worked to support the war effort. After the war Helen met Reynold Clem Baumler. They were married in Phoenix, Arizona on February 15, 1947. Together they have four children.
Helen was a support for her husband’s business along with serving as a cook for the North Fayette School system for several years. She was a long time member of Holy Name Catholic Church, Holy Name Rosary Society and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15.
Family was important to Helen, and she shared her baking and homemaking skills with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to read and share her crocheting skills with family, along with playing dominos and spending time with many dear friends.
Helen’s death occurred on June 24, 2011, at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, WI., at the age of 93 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers Clair and Vern; six brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, James (Marsha) Baumler, Mary Jane (Jim) Tope, Sally Baumler, all of West Union and Carol (Bruce) Hovden of Charles City; ten grandchildren, Amanda Flotho and Jamie Baumler, Carrie Tope and Betsie Frey, Laurie Tope, Quentin Stepp, Bridget Parker and Suzy Schreve, April Ament and Ross Hovden; twelve great-grandchildren; one brother Carl Wagner and three sisters Francis Kaester, Iva Adrian and Amy Burgess; 8 sister-in-laws; 3 brother-in-laws; and many dear and beloved friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at 2:30 pm, at Holy Name Catholic Church West Union, IA. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, West Union, IA.
Public visitation will be held Monday, June 27, 2011, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with rosary prayer at 5:00 pm and a Scripture service at 7:30 pm, at the Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union, IA.
