Funeral services for Shirley Martinek of Cresco were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 29 at Notre Dame Parish — St. Joseph's Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Henry Charipar officiating. The pall was placed by her husband and children. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were: Gerald Ferrie, Denis Ferrie, Jim Reicks, Charles Reicks, Allen Weisler, and Randy Vsetecka. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Shirley, 65, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at her home southeast of Cresco of cancer.
Shirley Ann Martinek was born September 23, 1938 in Cresco, the daughter of Albert J. and Louise (Scholbrock) Reicks. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She attended St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1956. Following her education, she worked as a waitress in Cresco, then moving to Rochester, MN and worked in the hospital cafeteria.
On October 29, 1958 she married Edward Martinek in St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Cresco. They began their married life on the Martinek farm.
Shirley was a homemaker who farmed with Ed, gardened, sewed, and made patch-work quilts. She was an active member of her church, a eucharistic minister, a religious education teacher for many years and its Altar and Rosary Society. She also participated in the Relay for Life.
She is survived by her husband Edward; eight children: Robert of Cresco, Marvin of Cresco, Carol Hrubes of Ankeny, Michael of Fountain, MN, Betty Nash of Belmond, Ronald of Mason City, Susan Martinek of Bloomingdale, IL, and Curtis of Clutier; 12 grandchildren: two brothers: Merlin of Cresco and Virgil Of Harmony. MN; and two sisters: Darlene Vsetecka of Alta Vista and Luverne Loftus of Dodge Center, MN.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and one sister: Betty Ferrie.
