DEATH OF DOC. O'MEARA.

T. J. O'Meara received a telegram today advising him that this morning his brother, D. D. O'Meara, died of heart trouble at Ellensburg, Washington. The deceased was 42 years or age. He was born in Canada, but the greater part of his active life has been spent in the United States. He was with the Union Pacific from 1865 till about 10 years ago, when he entered the service of the Northern Pacific. He has been in Washington several years. He visited Mr. O'Meara this city several times, last in 1887 when on his way to a convention of the Order of Railway conductors. The funeral will be held at Ellensburg, where his nephew is in charge of the remains. Mr. O'Meara asked by wire that it be forwarded here, but the reply that came back this afternoon advised the other course and it will be complied with. Our townsman has general sympathy in his bereavement.

Roseanne was thought to be Rose Slavin... until I found Rose Slavin's 1861 record still with brother John and mother Mary (McCourt). I now believe this to be Roseanne O'Meara b. 1849 (I believe the age listed is 11, not 19.)

Research notes for Doc

Dennis D. "Doc" O'Meara is another of my "Adopted Ancestors."

Dennis O'Meara was the 11th child of Thomas O'Meara (1797-1871) and Ellen Tierney (1809-1891). After the 1851 and 1861 census records, I had nothing. Later I found this...

Yesterday Mr. T. J. O'Meara received a telegram announcing the death of his brother, D. D. O'Meara in Ellensburg, Washington.
The Davenport Tribune - Aug 26, 1892

Years later I searched some more and found 3 obits (such as they are). Two from Davenport, IA and one from The Dalles, OR. Two of these referred to him as "Doc" O'Meara. As for the facts of the obits, I question the validity of the age of 42. That would make DOB late 1849 or early 1850. 1851 census lists ages of Doc and Martin as 5 and 3. Likely both wrong albeit close. 1861 lists ages at 13 and 10. I find these more likely closer to true. It's possible that Doc - AND SO, SO MANY MORE - lied about their age as they got older. It happens.

Date of death seems to be widely accepted as Aug 1892. The Dalles obit states his body was found on the morning of Aug 24. The early Davenport obit states he died "this morning" and was dated Aug 25. In any case, it's late Aug. I put a bit more stock in The Dalles article as it's much closer geographically to the actual event.

Ellensburg was on the line for the Northern Pacific Railway in 1892. It was likely there since a few years earlier. In any event, a map of the line circa 1900 clearly shows Ellensburg on the main line to Tacoma, WA. This also fits as Doc was a conductor for that rail company.
