Many Attend Smith Services at Sacred Heart Church

Mrs. J. H. Smith died Friday, morning January 15, at her home two miles south of Alvord, following an illness of seven weeks.

Mrs. Smith, nee Jennie O'Meara, was born in Clinton county, Iowa, October 3, 1869, and was united in marriage 38 years ago to James Smith, moving then to Lyon county where they have since made their home. She is survived by her husband and son, Vincent. Other children were Irene, LeRoy and Enas, all of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Smith also took care of her brother's youngest child, Marie, (Mrs. Bernard Reilly) since babyhood, and to whom she was as good as any mother could be.

Other surviving relatives are: Thomas O'Meara of Farmington, Minn.; M. H. O'Meara of Hadley, Minn.; and Dan O'Meara and Mrs. John Clark of Aneta, N. D., brothers and sister of Mrs. Smith. The deceased woman was a faithful member of the Catholic church, devoted wife and mother, and a kind, sympathetic neighbor. She will be missed not only by her relatives, but by her many friends.

The funeral was held from Sacred Heart church Monday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Father Graf officiating. The remains were laid to final rest in St. Mary's cemetery.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were Thomas O'Meara, Irwin O'Meara and Mrs. John Doosney of Farmington, Minn., and Mrs. Bernard Reilly of Huron, S. D.

When my mother [Kathryn O'Meara] was about 9 and Uncle Dan [Daniel O'Meara] about 7 both their parents were dead. The children were taken to Kemptville, Ontario, Canada. My mother lived there until she was 16. She then came to Alvord, Iowa and lived with her sister Jennie [Jane] Smith. She taught school near there until she married my father [James Keegan]. Dan stayed there until he was a young man. Then came to Anita, North Dakota where his sister Nell [Ellen O'Meara] and family lived. He was a mail carrier all his life.
