Seventy-six Years of Age; Had Been Ill for Several Months--James Smith, an early Lyon county settler, passed away at his home at Alvord Sunday morning at 7 o'clock, after a heart illness of several months. Mr. Smith was 76 years old.
Mr. Smith was born in Clinton, Iowa, December 12, 1862, and came to Lyon county in 1898. He married Jennie O'Meara at Petersville, Iowa, in 1893. To this union seven children were born, six dying in infancy. He leaves to mourn his loss one son, Vincent, of Alvord, two grandchildren, two brothers, John Smith of Davenport and Ed Smith of Clinton, and one sister, Elizabeth Smith of Davenport, and a host of other relatives and friends. His wife preceded him in death seven years. Mr. Smith was an upright man, a respected citizen and a devout Catholic.
Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart church on Tuesday morning, Rev. Father Bucholtz officiating at requiem high mass. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery in Alvord.
Among other relatives from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Smith and family of Clinton, Miss Elizabeth Smith of Davenport, and John Smith of Davenport.
