Rita, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, nurse, and artist, died with dignity in her home on the morning of November 14, 2010, in the presence of her loving children. Deeply loved by her family, she is survived by daughters Elizabeth Grover (Richard), Marilyn Lowe (Jim); son Allan McCartin (Brenda); grandchildren Sarah Smith (Brent), John Grover (Anita), Garth Grover (Susan Hodgson), Katie Despaties (Eric); great-grandchildren Patrick, Callum, Liam, Mischa, Maya, and Jean-Emmett; sisters-in-law Eva, Kathleen, Maureen, Pat and their families, and all the O'Connell and McGrath families. Born in Fallowfield, Ontario, March 6, 1916 to Eliza and Peter Smith, Rita's life was well lived. She embraced it to the fullest, never wanting to miss an opportunity to learn, to live and to love. Her beauty and charm, won the heart of John Emmett McCartin, whom she married in 1940. Together, they travelled the world, were soul mates, and had 67 wonderful years together. She was passionate about her family. She was proud of her Irish-Catholic heritage, and Ottawa Valley roots. Rita had a beautiful, creative, artistic, and elegant style which was reflected in everything she did, whether a casual gathering at Victoria Beach or a formal dinner at home. She was always ready for a game of cards, a lively discussion of current events, and any social get-together Predeceased by John Emmett in May 2007, an infant daughter Valerie-Lynn (1948), and her dear sisters Helen O'Connell, Mary McGrath and brother Joe Smith The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care given by Dr. Heather Frame, and the Palliative Care Program. A special thank you to Sherry, Florrie, Irene and Della for their dedicated care. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, November 18 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford Street, followed by a private family interment.
