It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Hickey on Feb. 24, 2022. He was in his 92nd year. Joe was a loving husband to Audrey Mears (predeceased 1996) and later to D’Ann Huth (predeceased 2021). He was the cherished father of Laurie (Norm Robertson), Mary-Ellen (Gord Procher), Brian (predeceased) & his wife Cathy & Daniel (predeceased) & his wife Rennie. He will be missed by his 10 grandchildren: Sean (Vicki), Steven, Heather (Jesse Peters), Jodi (Anthony Lachance), Lindsay (Andrew), Joseph (Caroline), Meaghan (Jake Fraser), Emily Procher (Mike), Thomas (Allyson), & Allison Procher. Also survived by 9 (soon to be 10) great grandchildren. Survived by D’Ann’s family in Wisconsin: Gerry & June Mello & their 6 children who became his second family. “Twas a night in September,” when Joe was born to Florence (Daly) & William Hickey. He was the brother of Gervase, Father James Hickey, Ignatius (Pug) (Reta), Clement (Gabby) & Anastasia all predeceased. Survived by his dear sister Bernadette (Harvey Eaton). Also predeceased by 2 very dear brothers in law: George Mears (Lillian), & Martin Mears (Eileen). Survived by many nieces & nephews on both sides of the family.
Joe married Audrey in 1952. They had many good years raising their four children in Lively. He worked for INCO in the printing department & retired to enjoy winters in Brownsville Texas & summers at their camp on Lake Agnew. They enjoyed fishing & entertaining family & friends at camp. Many an evening would end with Joe singing one of his favourite ballads & entertaining all with one of his lengthy jokes.
Joe was a devout Roman Catholic & member of St. Pius X in Lively. The family would like to picture Joe sitting around the great card table in the sky, reunited with Audrey, Brian & Dan. Special thank you to all of the Meadowbrook staff who helped him during his 7 years there. And a special thank you to nurse Mary Anne, Debbie & many others at Extendicare York. A Memorial Mass will be held St. Pius X, Lively on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 11am. (Friends may gather at the church after 10:45am Saturday, May 14th, 2022). Always remembered. Always in our hearts. May the Lord hold you in the palm of his hand. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Soup Kitchen or Northern Cancer Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
