VERNA C. BURK

Mrs. Verna Capman Burk, 79, of 17385 Grevillea St., Fontana, died Saturday in a Los Angeles hospital. A native Of Chatham, Canada, Mrs. Burk had lived in Fontana 26 years. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. George's Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Gilbert C. of San Diego and Roy Joseph of Huntington Park; a daughter, Mrs. Edith Sandidge of Los Angeles; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Rosary was recited Tuesday at Stanley L. Dickey Mortuary, Fontana. Mass will be at 9 a.m. today at St. George's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Bloomington.

Nora and Peter were married 20 Oct 1915. Gilbert and Edith are not Peter's children. Fine. Searched more and found she married George C. Doerfler (24 Sep 1875 - 26 Nov 1909) on 17 Dec 1904. Good. Edith is George's child, but Gilbert is not. Found Gilbert as child of John Ashman Chapman and Nora Chapman. Does this fit? Sure. Is it likely? Well, I don't know. But it's what I think happened - or at least part of what happened. I cannot find a marriage record for John Chapman and Nora V Capman, and the marriage record to George says it's her first marriage. But the records of Gilbert are very compelling.

24 Nov 1904 - Gilbert is born - father is John Ashman Chapman, mother is Nora Chapman - Gilbert Birth Record
17 Dec 1904 - marries George C. Doerfler - record says "Nora Vernon" and 1st marriage - Nora & George Marriage Record
24 Nov 1906 - Edith Marie is born - father is George Doerfler, mother is Vernie Capman - Edith Birth Record
26 Nov 1909 - George C. Doerfler dies - George Death Record
1910 - I have searched every way I know how and cannot find a census record for her, Gilbert and Edith
20 Oct 1915 - marries Peter Burke - children go by surname Burke from here on out
26 May 1918 - Roy is born to Nora V and Peter Burke

Gilbert is the problem. He is born 24 Nov 1904 to (presubably) a married John Chapman and Nora Chapman. Then 23 days later she marries (first marriage) George Doerfler? The thing that makes me think it's right - although strange - is the CA DI of Gilbert Burke with the correct DOB and mother's maiden name.
