Research notes for Theodore
01 Jul 2024 - Date of birth
Theodore's DOB has always been 25 Jul 1816. It's on his HS. It's in the obit. Later, it was matched to the emigration docs. All of them match. Then the baptism record image came. It clearly says 03 Aug 1816. 9 days later. So, where's the disconnect? Generally the closer to event, the more correct it's likely to be. But in this case... I don't know. There are documented cases of people changing their DOB to escape various situations. The emigration doc is dated 04 May 1846. Did he need to be 9 days younger? Seems thin. He age would change from 29y 9m 1d to 29y 9m 10d - no obvious "tipping" points. So, for me, it comes down to this. There's an obvious error somewhere. The question is where. If it was HS & obit vs. baptism, I'd go with the baptism record. No question. But the emigration record tips it for me. He's 29. I can find no reason to "fib" about his DOB - especially 9 days. He's not addled by age/memory problems at this point. Plus, Ludowica's DOB is spot on. I'm sticking with 25 Jul 1816. This means the baptism record is wrong. The record is from 1816, yet is listed out very nicely in columned pages. I can't help but think it may not be the original, but rather transcribed. I'm putting this down as a transcription error.
