Death removed another of Burlington's well known citizens Wednesday when Henry Vos, a resident of this city for 45 years, passed away at his home on McHenry street shortly after noon. Mr. Vos' death followed a short illness, he having been sick only since New Year's.
The deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Vos, and was born March 10, near New Munster. His boyhood was spent in that vicinity. Shortly after coming to Burlington he was married to Miss Josephine Plate, the ceremony being performed May 5, 1891, at St. Mary's Catholic church by the Rev. Father Jacobs.
For a time after coming to Burlington Mr. Vos operated a store with his brother Frank, and later was a member of the firm of Schemmer and Vos, operating a store in the buildings now occupied by the Bauman grocery and the Christien shoe store. After leaving the store business, Mr. Vos engaged in a number or occupations. For a time he was janitor of St. Mary's church, and engaged in the monument and vault business.
Mr. Vos is survived by his widow, Mrs. Josephine Vos, eight children, Herbert Vos, Edmund Vos, and Cletus Vos of Antioch, Ill., Alois Vos, Kansasville; Roman Vos, Cedar Lake, Ind., Mrs. Stanley Szydlowski and Mrs. Henry Oldenburg, Burlington, and Mrs. George Feiereisen, Neenah, and 13 grandchildren. He is also survived by six sisters, Mrs. Agnes Bushman, Mrs. Theodore Richter. Mrs. Ben Rothering, and Miss Dora Vos of this city; Mrs. Emmett Merrick, McHenry, Ill., and Mrs. John Koenen, Lyons, as well as by two brothers, Frank Vos of Burlington and William Vos of Muskegon, Mich.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9 oclock at St. Mary's church, where a requiem solemn high mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Father Kersting, pastor of St. Mary's, assisted by Father George Schemmer, Green Bay and Father Salbreiter of Mukwonago. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery in this city.
