John L. McCarthy, 78, Dies; Was Businessman 58 Years
John L. McCarthy, 78, lifelong Burlington resident and partner in a Burlington furniture store and funeral home for the last 58 years, died Friday at Sacred Heart Sanitarium, Milwaukee.
McCarthy had been a partner in the McCarthy-Rueter furniture store and funeral home since Oct. 9, 1899. He was Burlington's oldest businessman in years of service.
Was Volunteer Fireman
He had been a member of the Burlington volunteer fire department for 50 years. Since 1951 three generations of his family served with the department. A son, John E. McCarthy, joined the force in 1928 and a grandson, John R., became a member in 1951.
The eldest McCarthy was a director of the Bank of Burlington and was a former alderman of the Second Ward and former member of the police and fire commission. He was the railway express agent in Burlington for 29 years.
McCarthy was a member of St. Mary's Church and its Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Rotary Club.
Funeral Is Tuesday
McCarthy was born in Burlington Dec. 25, 1877 and attended St. Mary's School. He was married in 1900 to the former Edna Perkins of Burlington who died in 1934. Later he married the former Elizabeth Gill of Burlington.
In addition to his wife and son, John E., he is survived by a second son, James P., Chicago; two daughters, Mrs. L. W. Kelly, Minneapolis, and Miss Carolyn McCarthy, Rockford, Ill.; 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a. m. St. Mary's Church, Burlington, with Msgr. Joseph Heim officiating. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery.
