Rev. Jos. Schemmer, formerly pastor of St. Joseph's German Catholic church in this city, passed away at the Sisters' hospital in Appleton, Friday, after an illness of upwards of a year with tuberculosis.
Father Schemmer received his education at St. Francis seminary near Milwaukee and was ordained there in 1893. His first charge was at Stockbridge where he was engaged as pastor from 1894 to 1896. His health failed at about that time and he resigned and spent the ensuing two years in Colorado, feeling at that time that his health was fully restored. He came to Stevens Point in 1898 to take charge of St. Joseph's parish, remaining here for four years, resigning in 1902 on account of his health and again he went west to try the same experiment which before had proved so successful in his case. However, the disease had this time progressed too far for relief. He returned to Wisconsin some months ago, realizing that the end was a matter of but a little time. He was 34 years of age.
Rev. Mr. Schemmer was a deep student, a faithful and successful pastor and during his stay here strengthened his charge in many ways, regardless of the fact that it probably suffered more that any other church in the city through the removal of certain families from the city during that time.
The funeral will be held at Chilton Monday morning at 10 o'clock. A number of his people from this city will attend. At his special request John Schmitt, Stephen Hautzinger and Peter Bonertz will act as pallbearers.
