Sister Mary Ellen Kaskie, 79, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died April 28, 2004, at Mother Joseph Manor. The funeral for Sister Mary Ellen will be held Friday, April 30, 2004, at 10 a.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, S.D. A Scriptural wake service will be Thursday, April 29, at 7 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Father Ben Benzinger, SJ, will be celebrant and homilist. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 SE 6th Avenue, in charge of arrangements. Mary Kaskie was born Sept. 24, 1924, to Ella Kappenman and Vincent Kaskie in Montrose, S.D. She grew up and was educated at Montrose Elementary and High School. She attended Notre Dame Jr. College; then earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Nursing at St. Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minn., and a Master of Science Degree from St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo., in 1947. Sister Mary Ellen entered Presentation Convent Jan. 19, 1942, and pronounced vows on Aug. 10, 1944. She served as a dietitian at Avera St. Luke's for 18 years and then in Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, Mont., and Aver McKennan in Sioux Falls. She served as the administrator at Holy Rosary Hospital for 2 1/2 years and then trained the first lay person to follow in that position. Sister enjoyed crafts, music and made many baptismal gowns for nieces and nephew which will no doubt be family heirlooms. Sister Mary Ellen is survived by her community family of Presentation Sisters and one sister, Marge Kersey, Sioux Falls, S.D. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers. Members of the Aberdeen Knights of Columbus will serve as casketbearers.
