James H. Kerkman, 86, passed away Saturday, December 26, 2009, at Memorial Hospital of Burlington. He was born September 1, 1923, in New Munster, to the late Henry A. and Clara (nee: Epping) Kerkman. He spent his early life and received his education in New Munster. James proudly served in the United States Army. He was a technician for the 420th Medical Collecting Company that was attached to the 82nd Airborn during World War II. On October 8, 1949, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Burlington, James was united in marriage to Arlene T. Arnold. Following marriage they resided in Burlington. James worked at the Burlington Co-op for 38 years and had worked part time for Kerkman Brothers Construction until January of 2008. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Burlington, the Catholic Forrester's, and Teamster Local #43.
James was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed golfing, watching westerns and reading. Survivors include his loving wife, Arlene; their children, Kathryn (James) Urban and James (Maria) Kerkman; grandchildren, Nicole Hawver, Brian (Melissa) Hawver and Tyler Gwizdek; and by eight step-great -grandchildren. James is further survived by siblings, Stanley (Dorothy) Kerkman and Betty Siehoff; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Kerkman, Marie Kerkman, Bernice Tomaszewski, Joan Arnold, Darrel Edmonds and Red Sarbacker; dear friends, Connie Johnson and Paula (Joe) Fox, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. James was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marcell, Francis and Leon (Rosemary); brothers-in-law, Bob Siehoff, Andy Tomaszewski, Eugene (Betty) Arnold and Elmer Arnold; sisters-in-law, Colletta Kerkman, Evelyn (Paul) Gall, Dorothy Sarbacker, Eleanor (Howard) Brook and Mildred Edmonds; and by a dear friend, Glen Johnson.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Bob Gosma officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family at Schuette Daniels Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, from 4 until 7 p.m. Memorials have been suggested to VNA Hospice or to the Leukemia Foundation.
