Dr. Harold A. Streit Captain USN/MC Retired - 93, died Dec. 26 at the St. Francis Home in Laconia.
Born Jan. 12, 1914 in Los Angeles, Calif., he grew up in Iowa before attending Medical School at Loyola University in Chicago.
In 1944 he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Navy Medical Corps serving as a Flight Surgeon through the end of the war. During this period he met his soon-to-be bride of 61 years ; LTJG Elizabeth (Betty) Gienandt. Streit served in the Korean War with the 1st Marine Division in November 1950 and was part of the infamous Battle of Chosin Reservoir. Life in the Navy offered a wealth of opportunities for travel and adventure with tours of duty in California, Massachusetts, Italy and Japan. Streit had a distinguished career with the United States Navy and was awarded numerous medals and honors for his service to our country. He left the Navy after thirty years wearing his Naval "wings" and as a well known orthopedic surgeon. Retiring in 1971 to Governors Island and Naples, Florida, he continued to pursue fishing, gardening and most of all, tennis.
Survivors include sons, Thomas Streit of Arlington, Mass., and Phillip Streit of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; daughter, Patricia Yagoda-Streit, of Largo, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of The Lakes Church, 50 Washington Street, Lakeport.
In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution may be made to a charity of ones choice.
